Edexcel AS Level English Literature (8ET0) Past Papers

The Pearson Edexcel AS Level English Literature qualification consists of two externally examined papers. Students study four literary texts across poetry, drama and prose. Both examinations are open book, allowing clean copies of the relevant texts to be taken into the examination.

Paper 1 – Poetry and Drama (8ET0/01)

60% of the qualification

Paper 1 is a 2-hour written examination worth 72 marks.

The paper contains two sections:

  • Section A – Poetry: 24 marks

  • Section B – Drama: 48 marks

Students answer one question from a choice of two in each section. Section A focuses on comparative analysis of the studied post-2000 poetry, while Section B requires an essay on the chosen drama text.

The paper assesses students’ ability to analyse literary form, language and conventions, as well as relevant contexts and different interpretations.

Paper 2 – Prose (8ET0/02)

40% of the qualification

Paper 2 is a 1-hour 15-minute written examination worth 44 marks.

Students study two thematically linked prose texts, with at least one text being pre-1900. The examination requires students to answer one comparative essay question from a choice of two.

The paper focuses on comparative literary analysis, including the relationships between texts, their contexts, language, form and structure.

Edexcel AS Level English Literature (8ET0) Syllabus Summary

The 8ET0 specification requires students to study four literary texts across poetry, drama and prose. The qualification develops students’ ability to analyse literary texts, compare works and consider how meaning is shaped by literary techniques and contexts.

Poetry

Study specified post-2000 poetry and develop your ability to analyse poetic form, language, structure, meaning and literary conventions. Comparative analysis is an important part of Paper 1.

Drama

Study one drama text from the prescribed selection. Practise analysing characterisation, dramatic form, language, structure, themes and relevant contextual influences.

Prose

Study two thematically linked prose texts, including at least one pre-1900 text. Develop comparative responses by exploring similarities and differences in the ways writers present ideas, characters, themes and contexts.

Literary Context

Develop an understanding of the social, historical, cultural and literary contexts surrounding the texts you study. Use context appropriately to support and develop your interpretations.

Comparative Analysis

Build the ability to make meaningful connections between literary texts. Compare writers’ choices, themes, forms, language and representations while maintaining a clear argument throughout your response.

Alternative Interpretations

Consider different ways literary texts can be interpreted and develop informed personal responses supported by relevant textual evidence.

Practice Edexcel AS English Literature Paper 1 and Paper 2

Working through both examination papers is an important part of preparing for Edexcel AS Level English Literature. Each paper assesses different areas of literary study, so practising across the complete assessment structure can help you develop a broader range of examination skills.

Use Paper 1 practice to strengthen your poetry comparison and drama essay writing. Use Paper 2 to develop your comparative prose responses and practise connecting two texts through themes, language, form, structure and context.

Develop Your Literary Analysis and Essay Writing

AS Level English Literature requires more than recalling quotations or summarising a text. You need to develop clear arguments, analyse how writers create meaning, use appropriate literary terminology and support your interpretations with relevant textual evidence.

Past paper practice gives you the opportunity to develop these skills under realistic examination conditions. Review your responses carefully and identify areas where you can improve your argument, textual analysis, contextual understanding, and comparisons between texts.

Use Mark Schemes to Review Your Answers

After completing an examination-style question, use the relevant mark scheme to review your response. Consider whether your argument is clearly developed, whether your textual evidence is well selected, and whether your analysis explains how literary choices create meaning.

Pay attention to recurring weaknesses and use them to guide your revision. If you find comparative writing, contextual analysis, or close language analysis challenging, return to the relevant topic questions and revision notes before attempting another past paper.

Combine Past Papers with Revision Notes and Topic Questions

For a more structured approach to AS Level English Literature revision, combine past papers with revision notes and topic questions.

Past Papers: Practice examination-style questions and become familiar with the structure and demands of the assessments.

Revision Notes: Review important themes, characters, literary techniques, contexts, interpretations, and textual details.

Topic Questions: Focus your practice on individual texts, themes, and literary concepts before progressing to complete examination papers.

Combining these resources can help you move from learning the texts to confidently applying your knowledge in examination conditions.
