Edexcel IGCSE English Language A (4EA1) Exam Structure
Pearson Edexcel IGCSE English Language A (Specification A) is a linear qualification. Students must complete Component 1, together with either Component 2 or Component 3. Component 1 and Component 2 are externally assessed, while Component 3 is a non-examined assessment option.
Component 1 – Non-fiction Texts and Transactional Writing
Paper 4EA1/01 is an externally assessed examination lasting 2 hours 15 minutes. It is worth 90 marks and contributes 60% of the total International GCSE.
The paper is divided into two sections.
Section A – Reading is worth 45 marks and uses a non-fiction text from Part 1 of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology together with a previously unseen extract. Students answer questions requiring them to select and interpret information, analyse writers’ language and structural choices, and explore ideas and perspectives.
Section B – Transactional Writing is worth 45 marks. Students choose one of two writing tasks involving a specified audience, form or purpose. The specification requires students to demonstrate effective written communication while using accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Component 2 – Poetry and Prose Texts and Imaginative Writing
Students who choose the externally examined route complete Paper 4EA1/02. This is a 1 hour 30 minute examination worth 60 marks, contributing 40% of the International GCSE.
Section A – Reading contains a 30-mark essay question based on a poetry or prose text from Part 2 of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology.
Section B – Imaginative Writing contains one 30-mark imaginative writing task selected from a choice of three.
Students are provided with the relevant anthology text during the examination.
Component 3 – Poetry and Prose Texts and Imaginative Writing
Instead of Component 2, students may complete Component 3 (4EA1/03) as a non-examined assessment. It is internally assessed and externally moderated and contributes 40% of the International GCSE.
The assessment consists of two assignments. Assignment A is a 30-mark essay based on any three poetry or prose texts from Part 2 of the anthology, with at least one poetry text and one prose text discussed. Assignment B is a 30-mark imaginative writing task.
Edexcel IGCSE English Language A (4EA1) Syllabus Summary
The qualification develops students’ ability to read critically, analyse texts, communicate effectively in writing and use Standard English accurately. It includes non-fiction reading, transactional writing, poetry and prose, and imaginative writing.
Non-fiction Reading
Students study contemporary non-fiction texts from Part 1 of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology.
They develop the ability to understand information, interpret ideas and perspectives, analyse linguistic and structural techniques and explore connections between different writers and texts.
Transactional Writing
Students develop writing skills for different purposes, audiences and forms. This requires students to communicate ideas effectively while adapting their tone, vocabulary, structure and language choices to the situation.
Transactional writing also requires accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Poetry and Prose
Students study poetry and prose texts from Part 2 of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology.
They need to analyse how writers use language and structural devices to create effects and communicate ideas. Strong responses should use relevant textual evidence and explain how writers’ choices contribute to meaning.
Imaginative Writing
Students develop their ability to create engaging imaginative writing. This involves developing ideas, creating an appropriate structure, using effective vocabulary and sentence structures, and maintaining accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Language and Structure
Understanding how writers use language and structure is central to the qualification. Students should practise identifying techniques and, more importantly, explaining why a writer has used a particular choice and what effect it creates.
Audience, Purpose and Form
Students should understand how writing changes according to its intended audience, purpose and form. Practising different transactional and imaginative writing tasks can help develop flexibility and control in examination conditions.
Pearson Edexcel English Language A Anthology
The specification includes a range of non-fiction texts in Part 1 and poetry and prose texts in Part 2.
Part 1 includes texts such as The Danger of a Single Story, A Passage to Africa, The Explorer’s Daughter, Explorers, or boys messing about?, Young and dyslexic? You’ve got it going on and Chinese Cinderella.
Part 2 includes texts such as Disabled, Out, Out–, An Unknown Girl, The Bright Lights of Sarajevo, Still I Rise, The Story of an Hour, The Necklace, Significant Cigarettes, Whistle and I’ll Come to You and Night.
