Edexcel A Level English Language 9EN0 Past Papers

The Edexcel A Level English Language qualification contains four components:

  • 9EN0/01 – Language Variation

  • 9EN0/02 – Child Language

  • 9EN0/03 – Investigating Language

  • 9EN0/04 – Crafting Language

The first three components are externally examined, while Crafting Language is a non-examination assessment that is internally assessed and externally moderated.

Paper 1 – Language Variation

Paper code: 9EN0/01

Language Variation accounts for 35% of the A Level and is assessed through a 2-hour 15-minute written examination worth 60 marks.

The paper contains two sections:

Section A – Individual Variation

Students analyze two unseen linked 21st-century texts or sets of data and produce an extended comparative response.

Section B – Variation Over Time

Students analyze two thematically linked unseen texts or sets of data from different periods and produce an extended comparative response.

The component develops students’ ability to analyze language according to factors such as mode, field, function, and audience, as well as geographical, social, and historical variation.

Practicing 9EN0/01 past papers can help you develop accurate linguistic analysis, comparison, and evaluation skills.

Paper 2 – Child Language

Paper code: 9EN0/02

Child Language accounts for 20% of the A Level and is assessed through a 1-hour 15-minute written examination worth 45 marks.

Students respond to unseen spoken or written data and explore the development of children’s language between approximately 0 and 8 years old.

Key areas include:

  • Spoken language acquisition

  • Early speech development

  • Phonetics and phonology

  • Morphology

  • Lexis and semantics

  • Syntax

  • Pragmatics and interaction

  • Children’s developing written language

  • Early reading and writing

  • Theories of language development

Practicing past papers can help you apply relevant theories to unseen data and develop structured analytical responses.

Paper 3 – Investigating Language

Paper code: 9EN0/03

Investigating Language accounts for 25% of the A Level and is assessed through a 1 hour 45 minute written examination worth 45 marks.

Students select and research a subtopic from one of five broad areas:

  • Global English

  • Language and Gender Identity

  • Language and Journalism

  • Language and Power

  • Regional Language Variation

The examination includes two sections. Students answer a question based on unseen data relating to their researched subtopic and an evaluative question requiring them to make connections with data from their investigation.

The subtopics for the examination are pre-released before the examination series, allowing students to undertake focused research and investigation. Pearson’s current guidance also confirms that the June 2027 pre-release subtopics are scheduled for release on 1 December 2026.

Component 4 – Crafting Language

Component code: 9EN0/04

Crafting Language accounts for 20% of the A Level and is a non-examination assessment component.

Students complete two assignments:

  • Two pieces of original writing from the same genre, differentiated by function and/or audience

  • A commentary reflecting on the writing and research undertaken

The component assesses students’ ability to craft language creatively and effectively for different purposes and audiences.

Although this component is not a traditional past-paper examination, understanding its requirements is important when preparing for the full Edexcel A Level English Language qualification.

  • Identifying the focus of each question

  • Selecting appropriate linguistic terminology

  • Analyzing language features

  • Considering contextual factors

  • Comparing texts and data

  • Evaluating language choices

  • Developing clear arguments

  • Supporting points with relevant evidence

  • Managing examination time

After completing a paper, review your responses and identify areas where your analysis, terminology, comparison, or evaluation could be strengthened.

Develop Your Language Analysis Skills

Strong language analysis is central to the Edexcel A Level English Language qualification.

Practise identifying and discussing features at different language levels, including:

  • Graphology

  • Phonetics and phonology

  • Morphology

  • Lexis

  • Semantics

  • Syntax

  • Pragmatics

  • Discourse

You should also consider how language choices relate to context, audience, purpose, identity, and other relevant factors.

Practice Comparative Analysis

Comparison is particularly important in language variation.

Use past papers to practice identifying similarities and differences between texts while explaining why those differences may occur.

Consider:

  • Who produced the text

  • Who the intended audience is

  • The purpose of the communication

  • The mode of communication

  • The subject or field

  • Social and geographical influences

  • Historical context

  • Language choices and their effects

Developing a consistent comparative approach can help you produce more focused and coherent examination responses.

Prepare for Child Language Questions

The Child Language component requires students to apply language development knowledge to unseen data.

Practise analysing how children’s language develops across different stages and consider areas such as vocabulary, sentence structures, speech sounds, meanings, and interaction.

Use past papers to practice connecting linguistic evidence with relevant theories and explaining how children’s language develops in context.

Develop Your Investigating Language Skills

Component 3 requires independent research and investigation.

Use past questions and revision resources to practice:

  • Analyzing unseen language data

  • Applying linguistic terminology

  • Evaluating language use

  • Connecting research with language analysis

  • Considering attitudes towards language and language users

  • Developing evidence-based arguments

The five investigation areas provide different contexts for applying language knowledge, while the pre-released subtopics change for each examination series.

Practice Writing and Crafting Language

The Crafting Language component provides an opportunity to demonstrate creativity and control over written English.

Students research a genre and produce original writing designed for different functions and/or audiences, followed by a commentary.

Practicing different writing styles can help you develop:

  • Audience awareness

  • Purpose and function

  • Structure

  • Tone

  • Vocabulary choices

  • Sentence structures

  • Stylistic techniques

  • Editing and proofreading skills

Combine Past Papers with Revision Notes and Topic Questions

Past papers are most effective when used alongside other revision resources.

Use revision notes to review key concepts, terminology, theories, and language frameworks. Then use topic questions to practice individual areas before progressing to complete past papers.

A structured revision cycle could be:

Learn → Practice → Analyze → Review → Repeat

This approach allows you to identify weaknesses and return to specific areas before attempting another examination paper.
