About Bedford School

Bedford School is an HMC independent school for boys located in the county town of Bedford in England. Founded in 1552, it is the oldest of four independent schools in Bedford run by the Harpur Trust.

Bedford School is composed of the Preparatory School (ages 7 to 13) and the Upper School (ages 13 to 18). There are around 1,100 pupils, of whom approximately a third are boarders. In 2014, James Hodgson succeeded John Moule as headmaster.

It has produced one Nobel Prize winner, recipients of the Victoria Cross, twenty-four rugby internationals, and the winners of seven Olympic gold medals.

For 2021 Entry into Bedford School year 7 will use the ISEB Pre-test.

Registration Deadlines & Examination Dates

The Deadline for registration is by Wednesday 9th December 2020. The ISEB Pre-test can be taken any time before Monday 18th January 2021 at either the candidates school or Bedford School.

In addition to the ISEB test, admission process requires a confidential reference from the Headteacher of the student’s current school and boys will also be interviewed.

About the ISEB Common Pre-test

The tests take about two-and-a-half hours to complete (English 25 minutes, mathematics 50 minutes, non-verbal reasoning 32 minutes, verbal reasoning 36 minutes) and can be taken together or at separate times, either in the candidate’s own school or at the senior school for which he or she is entered

ISEB Pre-Test Format:  

The test is taken on a computer and consists of multiple-choice questions. It is broken down into four parts: 

  1. English – 25 minutes(reading comprehension, sentence completion, spelling and punctuation) 
  2. Mathematics – 50 minutes(in line with Year 5 of the UK National Curriculum) 
  3. Non-Verbal Reasoning – 32 minutes(shape analogies, classes like, horizontal codes) 
  4. Verbal Reasoning – 36 minutes(common words, antonyms, word combinations, letter transfer and number codes)
