Edexcel IGCSE English Language B 4EB1 Exam Structure
The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language B qualification is a linear qualification consisting of one mandatory externally assessed component. The examination is 3 hours, carries 100 marks, and accounts for 100% of the qualification.
Component 1 – Reading and Writing
Paper code: 4EB1/01
Assessment: Written examination
Duration: 3 hours
Total: 100 marks
Weighting: 100%
The paper contains three sections:
Section A – Reading
Section A is worth 40 marks and assesses students’ ability to read and analyse two previously unseen text extracts. Questions require students to select and interpret information, analyse linguistic and structural choices, and explore links between writers’ ideas and perspectives.
Students should therefore practise identifying relevant evidence, analysing language and structure, comparing perspectives and explaining how writers create particular effects.
Section B – Reading and Writing
Section B is worth 30 marks and requires students to produce a transactional writing response based on ideas presented in the source texts.
The question specifies the intended audience, form and/or purpose. From the November 2025 examination series onwards, the specified text types include:
Article for a magazine or newspaper
Speech or talk
Letter
Contribution to a website
Students should focus on adapting their language, tone, register and structure to suit the task rather than simply reproducing a memorised writing format.
Section C – Writing
Section C is worth 30 marks and gives students a choice of three writing tasks. The tasks assess discursive, narrative and descriptive writing skills.
Students should develop the ability to communicate ideas effectively, organise writing logically, use varied vocabulary and sentence structures, and maintain accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Why Practice Edexcel English Language B Past Papers?
Past papers allow students to move beyond simply reading revision material and actively apply what they have learned. Regular practice can help students become familiar with the wording of questions, develop effective time-management strategies and identify areas that need further improvement.
For English Language B, past papers are particularly useful because students need to demonstrate both reading analysis and extended writing skills within the same examination. Completing full papers under timed conditions can also help students become more comfortable managing the three different sections.
Use Past Papers with Revision Notes and Topic Questions
The best results from revision often come from combining different types of practice. Use revision notes to understand key concepts and examination skills, topic questions to target specific weaknesses, and past papers to bring everything together in a realistic examination environment.
Exam Papers Practice provides online resources designed to support this process. Students can move from learning a particular skill, to practising individual question types, and finally to completing complete IGCSE Edexcel English Language B past papers under timed conditions.
How to Use IGCSE Edexcel English Language B Past Papers Effectively
Begin by completing individual questions without worrying about your overall score. Concentrate on understanding exactly what each question is asking and selecting evidence that supports your response.
As your confidence develops, start completing sections under timed conditions. Pay particular attention to how much time you spend on reading, planning and writing.
Once you are comfortable with individual sections, complete full 3-hour papers. Review your answers afterwards and identify recurring weaknesses, such as insufficient analysis, limited comparison, weak organisation, inappropriate tone or inaccurate spelling and punctuation.
You can then return to the relevant revision notes and topic questions before attempting another paper.
