How to Succeed in IB ESS SL

1. Understand the Syllabus
Start by reviewing the official IB ESS SL syllabus or a simplified version. Use it as a checklist to guide your revision, ensuring all key topics are covered.

2. Use Targeted Revision Notes
Look for clear and concise revision notes that align with the IB ESS SL curriculum. These should include:

  • Key definitions and concepts

  • Diagrams, such as system models and energy pyramids

  • Summaries of important case studies

Exam Papers Practice offers structured IB ESS SL revision notes designed to help you study efficiently and effectively.

3. Practice Past Papers
Familiarity with the exam format is essential. Use past papers to test your understanding and improve your exam technique under timed conditions.

On Exam Papers Practice, you can access a wide range of past papers and sample answers to guide your preparation.

4. Create Flashcards and Mind Maps
Visual aids are powerful tools for memory retention. Use flashcards for definitions and mind maps to link related topics and systems.

5. Review the IA Criteria Carefully
Your internal assessment is a significant part of your final grade. Choose a relevant topic, follow the criteria closely, and ensure your investigation is well-structured and thorough.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Memorizing Without Understanding
Avoid rote memorization. The IB expects you to apply your knowledge to environmental and societal issues, not just recall facts.

2. Neglecting Case Studies
You’ll need to reference real-life examples in your responses. Prepare detailed case studies for each major topic and know them well.

3. Ignoring Paper 1 Practice
Paper 1 focuses on analyzing case studies and data. Practice this format regularly to build confidence and analytical skills.

4. Poor Time Management
Timing is crucial in both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Simulate real exam conditions during your practice sessions to improve your pacing.

5. Not Reviewing Mistakes
When practicing, always review your errors. Understanding where and why you lost marks will help you avoid making the same mistakes in the actual exam.
